Is Los Angeles and the West Hollywood area an unsafe place to live?

I'm just turning 18 and my boyfriend is 19. We 've started to look at rentals and job opportunities out there in Los Angeles and we're wondering how unsafe that area is to live. We 've found the right places in our price range, but I'm just worried how dangerous it is.
