how do i contest a real estate development next door to my property?
joshsaraahonen asked:
A Real Estate Developer owns all the property around mine and wants to build low-income housing units. Previous tenants have been drug-users & have had multiple calls made to the sheriff.
I’m going to the County Board of Supervisors & am having neighbors sign a petition.
Any other steps I should take?
We’ve lived here for two years – this is a new project this owner as come up with …

Let me see,, you bought a house in a place where someone else is ready to start a development of low income houses?? They were there first? and you want to make them change their mind??
First of all, if this property has to be rezoned or reclassified you must be notified by the ruling government body. (in most cases), I would think that they probably already have all their permits before they bought the property. That is the way that developers work. Don’t buy the land before it is OK’d for their use.
Not a lot you can really do.. sorry..

I would check with the planning commission of your city. Normally when a developer wants to do a project, there are hearings and you can present your petitions and speak against the project.
You can also get the specs of the proposed project. It could be that what is proposed is better than what used to be there. Get all information you can about the proposed project and proceed from there.

You go to planning and zoning and city council meetings with a petition and lots of neighbors that don’t want the housing development to happen. It’s a lot of work but a great way to get to know your neighbors and all those people you voted for. The more people you can organize, the better chance you have of stopping them. And always remember that an upset group of informed people are voters. And don’t forget to write to your local paper-a letter to the editor type of thing that will put light on your predicament-and go speak to any local political groups, TV news, shed a lot of light on what is going on and sway voters to your cause. Here they have to publish what is going on at what place so you know to be there and always check to see when they may try to sneak something past you. Good luck. Go get ‘em.

In my municipality, as I am sure is the same in yours, the subject property must be posted as the the intent of the project & when the public hearing is for the project in front of the local planning commission. If not, call & find out when that meeting will be. Be prepared to give either the project address, the applicant or the property tax parcel number or all of the above.
Attent that meeting, with your petition in hand & as many supporters as you can, with all documentation & facts as to the detriment it will cause the neighborhood.
